On the occasion of our online exhibition "Centenary: The Mattsee Incident. Arnold Schönberg and summer retreat antisemitism in the Salzkammergut" we have integrated the related newspaper clippings into the library database.
We distance ourselves from the antisemitic and inhuman texts of the right-wing publications, but nevertheless share the contents in order to make the events of the early summer of 1921 comprehensible.
Schönberg's environment reacted to his expulsion from Mattsee with frightening, trivializing naiveté. The early swastika activities in Salzkammergut made future developments foreseeable, to which Schönberg repeatedly warned.
We have published a detailed essay on the subject by the Director of the Archive at the Arnold Schönberg Center, Therese Muxeneder, in our scholarly publication series.
