Mathilde to Arnold Schönberg
June 1909
The Library of Congress, Washington D.C.
Schönberg spent his vacation in the summer of 1909 with his family in Steinakirchen (Lower Austria), where he composed the Five Pieces for Orchestra, op. 16, and the monodrama Expectation, [Erwartung] op. 17. Mathilde Schönberg arrived with the children at an earlier date.
“My dear,
here you have a picture postcard from Steinakirchen and also a part of the river when there is water in it, which you can't say at the moment.
Warmest greetings
Your Mathilde”
