Salzburger Chronik 57/122 (2 June 1921), p. 4
Austrian National Library, Vienna
Like many of his artist contemporaries, Arnold Schönberg enjoyed summer retreats far from urban distractions, where he would work on composition projects and publications, teach and relax with his family, friends and students. In 1921 he chose Mattsee, the lakeside resort north of Salzburg. He arrived there on 2 June; on that same day, the following notice was published in the Salzburger Chronik daily newspaper:
“This year’s tourist season in Mattsee promises to be very good. Already now guests arrive. For the months of July and August, all apartments are already booked. Hopefully, the active tourist association will also succeed in keeping our seaside resort free of Jews this year.”
